The island of Rügen is not only one of Germany's most popular holiday destinations, but also a true paradise for anglers. Zander fishing is particularly popular here. The mix of lagoon waters, quiet bays, and deeper channels provides ideal living conditions for zander—one of the most sought-after predators in our waters.
Pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) love murky water, structured bottoms, and slow-flowing currents – conditions that the lagoons around Rügen offer in abundance. Whether Strelasund, the Kubitzer Bodden, or the Greifswalder Bodden: These waters are among Germany's hotspots for large zander.
The best fishing areas on Rügen
1. The Strelasund
The Sound between Rügen and the mainland is one of the most popular areas for zander anglers. The current, the water depth, and the numerous groynes make it an ideal hunting ground—for both the zander and the angler.
2. Kubitzer Bodden
Known for its large zander and pike, this lagoon boasts a diverse range of structures and numerous plateaus, gullies, and weed beds. There's a lot of activity here, especially in spring and autumn.
3. Greifswald Bodden
This lagoon is shallower but still very productive. Good zander regularly take the line here, especially in the morning and evening hours—especially when trolling or vertical fishing.
The best time for zander
The zander season on Rügen usually begins after the closed season, i.e., from May/June, and lasts until late autumn. The cooler months of autumn are particularly promising, when the fish prepare for winter and hunt most actively.
👉 Closed season in MV (as of 2025):
Zander are protected in coastal waters in MV from April 23 to May 22 - in inland waters, which are subject to the regulations of the Landesanglerverband (LAV) MV, a closed season applies from April 15 to June 1.
Please always inform yourself about the current regulations!
Successful fishing methods
1. Rubber fish on the jig head
A classic for zander fishing. In the lagoon waters of Rügen, jig heads between 10 and 25 grams should be used, depending on the depth and current. Common colors: Motoroil, Chartreuse, White, or Firetiger.
2. Vertical fishing from a boat
It's especially effective when positioned over deeper channels or ledges. The presentation is precise, and you can often catch zander right under the boat.
3. Lazing around
A very successful technique when casting from the shore or boat. The lure is moved with short, targeted movements to imitate the prey fish.
